There is a push on at the federal and state government levels to educate the public about the dangers of distracted driving, that is, driving while calling, texting, and according to some, using a personal navigation device. The National Highway Traffic Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently launched Distraction.gov as a focal point for education efforts and statistics. For example, in 2008, nearly 6,000 people died on American roadways in crashes that involved distracted driving.
I'm all for education and perhaps even well-crafted laws regarding distracted driving, but personal navigation device users will need to remain vigilant to make sure we're not lumped into the same category as texting drivers, for example. You can be a safer driver while using GPS, as long as you follow the rules. I'll alert readers here if and when I learn of proposed state laws that put our rights to sensible on-road navigation at risk. Image © NHTSA
