Callaway uPRO MX Golf GPSWith smartphone golf GPS apps stealing a lot of the thunder from dedicated handheld golf GPS units, we have to wonder how manufacturers will respond. Callaway Golf's uPRO division has provided an answer with its just-announced uPRO MX. This is an aggressive move by Callaway, clearly intended to provide value beyond the smartphone apps, and at the same time to compete on price and features with offerings from other handheld makers, including Garmin. The uPRO MX is controlled by a touchscreen that accepts multi-touch gestures, and is to sell for a very competitive $199. It also includes a free, 25,000-course database, including course aerial photography, that may be updated for free online by using a simplified download process. The uPRO MX's Green View shows each green and the area around it in detail, while Callaway's SmartView shows images of the hole relative to the golfer's current position. A ProMode option provides video flyovers of holes. The video demo of the uPRO MX reveals an intuitive touchscreen interface. Watch for the Callaway uPRO MX in May. Image © uPRO

Calloway has treated me well. I purchased the uPro just as Calloway took over the product. The first one went south after a year or so yand they sent me a new one new model – no charge. That one lasted about the same time and they are sending me this new model – no charge. I would have expected “out of warrantee” but no. I am surprised and -of course – pleased.
