Review: MapMyRide Online Route Creation and Sharing Service

The ups and downs of the popular desktop route creation tool

Too many route creation apps lack the basic ability to turn a custom route into a usable set of driving directions. The tools are difficult to use, file formats are obscure and don't translate to other platforms, or the route lines fail to follow the path of the road.

Fortunately, MapMyRide overcomes these flaws with a route creation tool that is quick, easy, and convenient to use.

While there is a MapMyRide app for iOS and Android devices, this review covers the the desktop version.

MapMyRide Online Route Creation and Sharing Service Review

Once you've signed up for the free MapMyRide online service, you can immediately begin mapping your first route. Input a start location, then select the type of ride you are preparing, such as a road or mountain route. A pannable, zoomable map will appear. Unlike other route creators we've reviewed, this map is quick-loading and easy to move and zoom.

Above all, the route creation tool performs as you would expect. It tracks roads accurately, creates distinct instruction steps that you can cycle through, and allows for quick and easy error corrections. As you build your route, the total route mileage is displayed in real-time. You can display elevation statistics in both numerical and graphic formats.

MapMyRide offers a large set of marker icons that you can drop anywhere on the map. An online tutorial will walk you through the advanced features. Once you've finished designing your route you can store it, share it with others online, print it, or export it to a GPS exchange format (GPX).

We created a route for a mountainous 70-mile ride. The summary included a nice elevation profile, total feet of elevation gain, and climb ratings. We were also able to import the route GPX file into our Garmin cycle computer.

MapMyRide's basic free features and free smartphone apps provide a lot of functionality. However, professional or dedicated athletes may want to review the paid subscription services, including training and nutrition elements.

Overall, MapMyRide online provides the best route-creation, printing, and export tools for cyclists.
