I've played quite a few rounds of golf with Garmin's Approach S1 GPS golf watch, and reviewed it here. The biggest advantage of a watch is that your distance information is always with you, and there's no need to lug and stow a handheld device. The Approach S1 was released in black-only, but has just been made available in white. It's a nice, feminine look for the S1, and guys, this thing has "gift" written all over it for the golfing woman in your life.
Approach S1 features include a free (and free to update) 17,000-course database, display with distance to the front, center, and back of the green from anywhere on the course, and a compact and lightweight (1.8 oz) form. The S1 also measures shot distance, has a walking odometer, and auto-advances to the next hole (you may manually set which hole, as well). It's a golf GPS I recommend, but if you want more features, such as color mapping, and nice scoring features and stats packages, consider my review of the top golf GPS devices. Image © Garmin
