TeleNav is taking some different approaches to smartphone navigation with its new GPS Navigator 7.1 app for Android devices from Sprint. Most noticeable is a new home screen (see photo) that has a My Dashboard for quick and easy access to personalized functions, and a map of the user's current location with a real-time traffic overlay. Beyond the unique home screen, the TeleNav GPS Navigator 7.1 app includes:
- Smoother and faster map rendering.
- Custom vehicle icons (how about a tank?).
- Turn-by-turn directions with spoken street names.
- Customizable Android widgets.
- Local search and reviews.
- Gas prices.
TeleNav GPS Navigator 7.1 runs on Android phones and tablets from Sprint. The app will be free with certain data plans, and premium features such as lane assist and speed trap warnings will cost $4.99 per month. Image © TeleNav

I was excited to get the new version of Telenav on my Sprint Galaxy S Epic phone. Unfortunately, the excitement gave way to dread as it locked up twice, and was unable to restart without shutting the phone off.
The 2nd time i was in the middle of nowhere at 2am and it was a huge problem as it took 30 minutes to get it restarted.
It first says “GPS SIGNAL HAS BEEN LOST”, but unlike the old ver, it doesn’t re-aquire it. Shutting off Telenav doesn’t work, as you can’t restart it. I won’t actually restart, or will try to sync and fails.
I hope Telenav finds out this is a problem and addresses it quickly. In the meantime, I’m making sure my Tomtom is in my car.
