With their built-in GPS sensors, still and video cameras, data connectivity, and touchscreens that are great for displaying maps, smartphones are terrific platforms for hiking and backpacking apps. Smartphone hiking apps also give you the ability to "journal" a trip with your own tracks, maps, photos, and videos and to share your outdoors experiences with your friends on social sites or by e-mail.
