It's been predicted for quite a while, and Apple finally announced it today at its World Wide Developer's Conference: spoken turn-by-turn directions as part of the iPhone's built in Maps app. The upgrade will take place when the new iOS 6 operating system becomes available this fall. In addition to turn-by-turn directions, the Maps app will offer interactive 3D views of select regions, as well as stunningly realistic flyover views. Real-time traffic detection and avoidance with alternate routing is another key feature to appear in iOS 6. One feature that may help set iOS 6 Maps apart is the integration of Siri voice commands. You'll be able to tell Siri the address of your destination, rather than manually inputting. Siri will also be used to conduct voice-driven search with directions while you're on the road. Local search features will also be integrated with turn-by-turn directions. Overall, this is a very promising development that I look forward to testing head-to-head with the best navigation apps out there. Image © Apple
