TomTom Start GPSTomTom continues to simplify its auto GPS model lines, and to push formerly high-end features into budget-priced models. TomTom today announced the addition of the budget Start line, ranging in price from the $119 Start 45, which has a 4.3-inch screen, spoken-street-name turn-by-turn directions, and advanced lane guidance, up to the $159 Start 55 TM (see photo). The Start 55 TM has a big, 5-inch touchscreen, and product-lifetime map updates and traffic detection & avoidance subscription. The new Start line includes six models. You'll get excellent navigation help with the Start models, but you won't get advanced features such as live local search, Internet integration, and Bluetooth hands-free calling sync until you move up into the TomTom GO line (starting at $249). Say what you will about the emergence of smartphones, there is still nothing better than a good, dedicated windshield mount GPS device for guiding you accurately through unfamiliar territory, and the new TomToms are worth a look.
