The compact (2.4" x 4.5" x 1.3"), waterproof, sturdily-built Garmin Oregon has long been one of my favorite handheld GPS devices for the backcountry. Garmin has just announced a set of new 600-series Oregons, with the 650 ($479) and 650T ($549) models including a built-in, 8-megapixel, auto-focus, digital zoom camera. The camera automatically geotags photos, as well. The new 600-series Oregons also accept Garmin's huge variety of topo maps and charts via microSD card, and internal memory ranging from 300MB to 4GB, depending on the model. The Oregons store up to 200 saved tracks, 10,000 custom waypoints, and they have a built-in, tilt-compensated, 3-axis compass. They are also paperless-geocaching-friendly. Image © Garmin
