GPS for Hiking and Fitness

There's a GPS for every outdoor activity.

Garmin, MotionX

Whether you run, bike ride, hike, kayak, or all of the above, there's a GPS device or smartphone app that will help you track your activities, and enhance the fun and safety of your outdoor recreation.

Fitness
Fitness GPS devices may be worn as a wristwatch, mounted on a handlebar, or carried in a pocket. Some are designed to be waterproof and durable in rugged conditions. Many fitness GPS units have optional heart rate monitors that can store and upload your heart rate and heart rate zone information.

Hiking and Geocaching
Handheld GPS devices and smartphone apps provide you with a color topographic map display that will keep you oriented in the backcountry. Handheld GPS will also record your route, elevation changes, waypoints, and more for future reference, or to share with others.

If you haven't tried geocaching, the outdoor treasure hunt and adventure game, here are some tips for getting started. Geocaching is especially fun for family groups and kids (and provides a sneaky science lesson).

On the Water
GPS has revolutionized on-the-water navigation for everything from canoes to seagoing ships. Find out how waterproof handheld GPS devices and offshore and lake charts can enhance the fun and safety of your recreational, fishing, or business boating.
