Teenage Drivers Safer With GPS?

Wednesday May 28, 2008

Teenage drivers are inexperienced in a lot of ways, but I've noticed that they are also on a learning curve when it comes to finding their way. The "mental maps" of our home regions that we experienced drivers take for granted have yet to form among teens. My son and his friends are smart, responsible drivers, but they get lost fairly easily. I recently lent them a GPS to find an out-of-the-way concert site, and they were absolutely thrilled with the no-hassle, here's-how-to-get-there instructions. I've had other parents tell me the same thing, and that the GPS provides their teens with a real sense of security as they take longer, unfamiliar trips. A driver who knows where he or she is going is also a safer driver, especially if they follow some basic rules for safe GPS use on the road. For these reasons, GPS receivers make good graduation gifts as well.
