Wikipedia on Your Car GPS

Monday August 18, 2008

I'm in the midst of testing the Dash Express, an Internet-connected car GPS, and going over its "saved search" features. There's no Web browser on the Dash Express, but it ports live information from the Internet to you via Dash applications that you can update to your unit. Many of the usual connnected-GPS offerings are there, such as weather, stock quotes, and Starbucks locations, but one caught my eye that I have never seen before: Wikipedia. I used Dash's online MyDash utility to update my GPS unit, and sure enough, Wikipedia appeared in my connected search options.

Search for "nearby" options, and every Wikipedia entry in your region is listed. I chose the "Steel Force" roller coaster, and learned that it's a mile long and has a top speed of 75 mph. There are no images or links, and the text is limited to the first few paragraphs of the Wikipedia entry; nevertheless, it's information you don't expect to get from a car GPS. I'll provide lots more on the Dash Express in an upcoming full review.
