I'm a fan of smartphone bird identification apps. Their searchable databases, and features such as the ability to play the songs and sounds of each species set them apart from paper field guides. National Geographic has just released an update to its Field Guide to North America birding app that includes 995 species. The app also has a powerful search and sort feature to help you quickly drill down to ID the bird you're seeing. You can geo-locate (using the smartphone's built-in GPS) and annotate your bird spotting with the touch of an icon. Nat Geo also states it will be updating this app for the iPad and for iCloud sync in the future. Image © National Geographic
