Definition: The Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) supplements satellite GPS signals to improve position accuracy within 3 meters or less. Originally installed to provide aircraft with precise navigation information, many newer consumer GPS devices receive and use WAAS signals. WAAS utilizes a network of ground-based transmitters to supplement the data received from GPS satellites in earth orbit.
