Definition:

A location-based service, or LBS, is any information, entertainment, or social media service that is available on a mobile device, and makes use of geographical position. Position is determined by GPS, A-GPS, or Wi-Fi/cell tower triangulation

Examples include turn-by-turn directions, gas prices near the user's location, services listing and rating nearby restaurants, and social media applications identifying friends' locations.

Location-based services are provided via mobile applications (apps), or are built into mobile device hardware and software.
